 Experiences !

Ever since seeing the film, “The Big Boss” aka “Fist of Fury,” I have been a die-hard fan of the Founder of Jeet Kune Do. Watching him on film had a big impact on my life. I loved watching him move on screen. It was like nothing I had ever seen before.

As fast as the Founder of Jeet Kune Do’s moves were, his life was over even faster. I was around eight years old when the news spread that Founder of Jeet Kune Do had died. He was truly my idol and I had always wanted to be just like him. Now I would never have the chance to meet him. Growing up with the passion to be “Founder of Jeet Kune Do,” I decided to purchase my first book on martial arts. Not having enough money to take an actual martial arts class, I gathered all the books and information that I could get my hands on. I applied the knowledge I learned from these books and began to practice on my own. I even went as far as to make my own nunchaku.  At the age of 16, I was finally able to sign up for Kung Fu. I had no idea what form of martial arts the Founder of Jeet Kune Do had practiced, although I thought he had done Kung Fu. I did not acquire the knowledge that I was yearning for in that class, so I started going from one school to another. Every teacher had a different view on what form of martial arts Founder of Jeet Kune Do developed, never teaching the true aspect of it. I once again decided to read everything and anything on Founder of Jeet Kune Do, and again began practicing on my own. One day, by chance, I met a local instructor by the name of Shihan Paul Curtin. He had created his own style of martial arts. I was very impressed by his moves and decided to study under him, taking private lessons for about twelve years. Even though I enjoyed taking the classes, in the back of my mind I still wanted to be like Founder of Jeet Kune Do.

Around 1993, I finally started getting a grasp on the form of martial arts that Founder of Jeet Kune Do had developed, called Jeet Kune Do. He also studied a system called Wing Chun Gung Fu. I started attending seminars with many of Bruce Lee’s original students. I would partake in any class or seminar that had something to do with Founder of Jeet Kune Do

I started training in Wing Chun Gung Fu through private lessons and remained studying Eclectic Karate with Shihan Curtin. I began to incorporate everything I had learned from Master Curtin; books, videos, seminars and private lessons, along with the 20 years of martial arts research. This resulted in my own expression of “Jeet Kune Do.” Just as Founder of Jeet Kune Do intended, I absorbed what was useful, rejected what was useless, and added what was essentially my own

Today many Jeet Kune Do practitioners might do what Founder of Jeet Kune Do did and some might do what Founder of Jeet Kune Do said. Some might believe in teaching someone, “how to fish or give them a fish,” but I truly believe in showing them how to work the boat first. Then they can catch much bigger fish. To truly understand Founder of Jeet Kune Do, you have to train like him and work as hard as he did. I try my very best to follow his teachings and his way of life. I truly believe, as Founder of Jeet Kune Do did, that you should have a foundation in martial arts and in life. As for my life, Jeet Kune Do has a very deep meaning for me, as you will learn in this book. You will also learn the base system of Wing Chun as Founder of Jeet Kune Do did. You will be able to flow from one system to another without being limited to one. You will get to feel the beauty and effectiveness of other martial arts and how well they go together. Remember, nothing in this book is etched in stone; you can change it, add to it, and modify it to fit your process of continuing growth. In my many years of martial arts, people have asked me what kind of karate I do? In reply I tell them, “I study Jeet Kune Do and Karate.” Since very few people have ever heard of Jeet Kune Do, I clarify by telling them that this is the type of martial arts Founder of Jeet Kune Do developed. Many martial art teachers do not think much of Jeet Kune Do because it is not a system of martial arts. Founder of Jeet Kune Do developed it personally for his own training. To me, Jeet Kune Do is a way of life; it is more than just a form and much more effective than any one individual style. Jeet Kune Do allows the artist to be free from all classical forms of martial arts. Showing the essence of Jeet Kune Do is one of the main reasons I began writing this book. This is not a Founder of Jeet Kune Do biography; nor is it a concept; it is an example of the proof that Jeet Kune Do is more than what most martial artists believe. Within this book, you will find the complete Jeet Kune Do system without the basis of an actual system, which I created, including its foundations; Wing Chun, Fencing, and Western Boxing. In addition, you will find illustrations from Eclectic Karate, Shotokan and Kenpo Karate, Ju Jitsu, Aikido, Judo, Kickboxing, and Ground Fighting. All of these techniques will work in an actual fight. When you are through studying my teachings, I hope that you will have gained a better understanding of what Jeet Kune Do is all about. I will show you the way, but it is up to you to find your freedom. You will also notice that my Jeet Kune Do might be a little different from other Jeet Kune Do practitioners. It doesn’t mean that either practitioner is wrong, as long  as the essence of Jeet Kune Do is present.
